Free Talk
Hey Sophomores,
Last week's free talk was a lot of fun so I thought that I'd do it again this week.
So I'll be having an open house at my apartment on Friday from 7:00-10:00.
Feel free to come, even if you're not one of my students, and we'll chat for a while.

Snickerdoodles
Some of you wanted a copy of the recipie we used to make the cookies last week so here it is!
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup shortening (Butter)
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 3/4 cups sifted all-purpose
flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
DIRECTIONS:
1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
2.In a large bowl, mix together the shortening and 1 1/2 cups of white sugar until smooth. Stir in the eggs one at a time, blending well after each. Combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; stir into the batter until blended.
3.Roll the dough into balls the size of small walnuts. Roll in a mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
4.Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned, but still soft.
Also if you didn't recieve the email the cost for each student is 6Y. This covers the expenses for all of the ingredients we used to make your cookies.

BAKING!
Hey Everyone!
Sorry about the delay. Before Danielle and I left for Thanksgiving weekend in Changsha with our friends we were going to post the cost of the baking. But as we were adding up the materials, we realized we needed more.
So, we will be shopping for more materials on Wednesday and by Friday we should be able to post the cost each student should bring to class next week.
See you at our apartments this week!

The Results Are In!
Well, the American public has voted, and you have also voted.
In the true American election, Barak Obama pulled ahead in victory. According to the Electoral College, Obama won by a very large margin; according to the popular vote, it was fairly close. Obama finished with 62.98 million votes (52%), and McCain finished with 55.75 million votes (48%).
In our sophomore classes the margin was a little wider.
Obama finished with 92 votes (82%)
McCain finished with 13 votes (11%)
Bob Barr finished with 3 votes (2%)
Cynthia McKinney got one vote (>1%) Go Cindy!
If we considered each of the five classes to be one state, Barak Obama would have come away with a clean sweep, holding all five of the electoral college votes, McCain with none.
Thanks for voting!

Week 8
October 20-24
A document has been emailed to everyone (everyone, that is, who has sent an email to our email address). Every student should print off the attached document and bring it to class next week (Week 9). We will be discussing the candidates positions on the selected topics presented.
The information gathered during class will also be useful for your FINAL EXAM at the end of the semester. That means it is important. Don't forget it.

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS in Class 1 and Class 3!!!
THE ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT WEEK HAS CHANGED!
Those of you who will be presenting on the Presidential Candidates, the presentation has been moved back one week. You will present during Week 9, Oct. 27-31. BUT, you should show Jesse and Danielle a summary of the work you have done so far. That means YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME WORK TO SHOW THEM. This could be some notes, some ideas, an outline, a rough ppt., etc.
Sorry for the change, but the lessons will work better this way.
ALL STUDENTS: You should review the Three Branches and the System of Checks and Balances. Who checks whom? Who does what?

Week 7
October 13-17
Reminder: Send an email here: WuDaEnglish@gmail.com, so that you get the documents needed for various assignments during the semester.
Homework for Week 7:
In class you should have been assigned a group (if you are presenting next week; if not, you will be given a group later in the term for a different presentation). Your group should also have been assigned a letter, (A, B, C, D) that corresponds to the list below:
Group A - Iraq, Afghanistan, G.I Expansion Bill, immigration
Group B - mortgage crisis, taxes, health care, S-CHIP
Group C - education, social security, abortion, death penalty
Group D - energy, gun control, climate change
Your group will have 5-7 minutes to present on the topics corresponding to your group letter. DO NOT SIMPLY COPY FROM WEBSITES! THIS SHOULD BE AN INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING PRESENTATION! In your presentation you will:
- Give the stance for BOTH Obama and McCain on the topics for your group. You may want to include things like quotations from their campaign websites, speeches, papers, past legislation, etc.
- You are welcome to use any type of visual aids to enhance your presentation.
- Try to make it interesting! :)
Here are two websites that will be helpful in your information gathering. Remember, DON'T COPY THEM!
A good site with basic info. (not enough for the presentation!) - http://minnesota.publicradio.org/projects/ongoing/select_a_candidate/president.shtml
This site gets a little deeper on some of the top issues people will be thinking about: - http://uspolitics.america.gov/uspolitics/elections/issues.html
This site has information on a very wide variety of topics. You should find a few good quotations by each candidate on the many article links available. Make good use of this site! You can select the topic listed alphabetically by title - http://www.realclearpolitics.com/topic/
FOR THE PEOPLE NOT PRESENTING: You should make yourself familiar with the candidates and the issues surrounding the upcoming election. Ignorance is not an excuse!
Here's a fun video on how a Bill becomes a Law. Enjoy!

Week 6
October 6-10
Welcome Danielle to Wuhan!
Three Things This Week:
1. Watch "3 Ring Government" on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5I2KFENjS8
2. Research the Branches of the U.S. Government and answer the following questions:
A. How does each branch get into office? (be specific)
B. How long do/can they serve in that position?
C. What does each Branch do? (use as many details as you think we want.)
Here are some websites to help, but don't be restricted by these:
http://www.usa.gov/Agencies/federal.shtml
http://bensguide.gpo.gov/3-5/government/branches.html
http://uspolitics.america.gov/uspolitics/government/constitution.html
A helpful PDF File will be emailed to you.
3. DO LAST: From the perspective of an American (pretend you are NOW and American), take the quiz located at this link, and record your results and bring them to class:
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/projects/ongoing/select_a_candidate/president.shtml
Write down the top four candidates the results give you, as well as the number below each name, indicating how closely you matched each candidate.

Newly Created Blog
Hello Sophomore English majors!
I have been searching for a blog site to host our classes and I think I have found one that is satisfactory. Like the other site this blog will facilitate the transmission of homework, assignments, and announcements.
Unfortunately I haven't discovered a way to post documents yet. If it is possible they will be here eventually. The way we will remedy this for now is through email! You'll notice that there is a Gmail account with the same name as this blog. All emails to and from this address should be strictly related to course work, the class, etc. Any documents you will need will be emailed to you through this address.
See you in class!!!
